POSITION OVERVIEW:
We are seeking a talented and passionate Expressive Arts Therapist to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience working with young adults who experience mental health challenges, a deep understanding of various artistic and expressive modalities (eg. visual arts, movement, sound/music, storytelling, creative writing) and a creative approach to expressive arts therapy. As an Expressive Arts Therapist Team Lead, you will be responsible for planning and delivering engaging expressive arts therapy sessions and workshops that promote recovery from mental health challenges, creativity, self-expression, and emotional well-being.

You will ensure that our services are client-centered and trauma-informed, and that the principles of co-design as well as evaluation are used to inform our service delivery model. You will utilize a young adult-directed recovery approach along with culturally responsive approaches to ensure successful engagement of diverse populations.
 
Peer Support Workers are embedded into almost all of our programs and are vital to our success. These programs aim to bridge the gap between youth services and adult services or to provide new training and skills. Our workshops and programs are regularly co-designed with the participants we serve to meet their needs.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Plan, develop, and deliver expressive arts therapy sessions (group and individual) tailored to the needs of young adults who seek services at Stella’s Place
  • Provide skilled assessment, formulation, and treatment services to participants by employing a variety of systemic and evidence-based/evidence-informed treatment approaches (including play based therapy, music therapy, art-based therapy, somatic and/or dance movement therapy, and mindfulness) to enhance interactions and functioning
  • Create a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages artistic expression
  • Collaborate with other staff members to integrate art activities into broader therapeutic and educational programs
  • Adapt sessions to meet the diverse needs of participants reflective of Stella’s Place
  • Keep up to date with best practices in expressive arts therapy and arts facilitation. 
  • Provide case management and outreach services to ensure coordination and delivery of services that meet changing needs of participants
  • Maintain accurate, timely, concise and confidential documentation where applicable, pertaining to participant history and encounter data
  • Engage in clinical charting, development, and evaluation of effective treatment plans for individuals and groups with the goal of improving participants’ psychological, social and physical wellbeing
  • Co-facilitation of various program offerings including closed and semi-open group format pertaining to arts drop-in sessions, workshops, groups and community projects
  • Supporting site supervision of expressive arts therapy placement students. 
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s degree in Fine Arts, Art Education, Art Therapy, or a related field
  • Registration with the CPRO, or with the OCSWSSW, and in good standing 
  • Membership with the Ontario Expressive Arts Therapy Association (OEATA), the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA), and/or the Ontario Art Therapy Association (OATA)
  • 3+ years of proven experience as an expressive arts therapist, with a mental health and youth focus.  
  • The ability to create a positive and encouraging team environment
  • Strong knowledge of various art techniques, materials, and processes
  • Strong knowledge on the formation of therapeutic alliances and administering
  • psychotherapeutic techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to implement evidence-based/evidence-informed mental health treatment approaches (i.e. attachment, play based or play therapy, trauma therapy, mindfulness, behaviour management, and crisis intervention) in an individual and group psychoeducational setting
  • Flexibility and adaptability in facilitation methods and approaches
  • Skilled in completing formal and informal assessments, and identifying person-centered treatment goals
  • Able to adapt assessment and treatment approach to the needs of participants, including clients of diverse cultural backgrounds & across various settings (e.g., online)

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:
  • Able to partner and work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including facilitation skills
  • Good critical thinking and decision-making skills

HOURS AND REPORTING:
This is a full-time position, at 40 hours/week with at least 3 days in the office. Hours of work range from 9:30a.m. to 9:00p.m.. You will be required to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
