ABOUT STELLA’S PLACE: 

Stella's Place is a charity dedicated to supporting young adults (ages 16-29) through accessible mental health services, peer support, and community-based programs. Our mission is to provide inclusive, evidence-informed care that empowers young adults in their mental health journeys.

Role Overview:

Stella’s Place is seeking a board member for its Board of Directors, with specific expertise and experience to support advising on human resource strategies to support Stella’s Place’s mission. This position works closely with the Board and the Executive Director to identify effective ways to engage staff, enhance recruitment and retention, and promote a positive and supportive workplace culture.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Together with the board and in support of the Executive Director:

  • Provide strategic guidance on human resource policies, best practices, and organizational culture initiatives.
  • Support the Executive Director and leadership team in developing strategies to attract, recruit, and retain high-quality staff.
  • Advise on employee engagement, motivation, and professional development opportunities.
  • Assist in creating policies and frameworks that promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in HR practices.
  • Help develop performance management and staff recognition programs to improve workplace morale.
  • Ensure HR policies align with employment standards, legal requirements, and nonprofit sector best practices.
  • Collaborate with the board and executive leadership on succession planning and leadership development.
  • Provide oversight and recommendations on workplace wellness initiatives and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Attend and actively participate in board meetings and relevant committee meetings.


Qualifications:

  • Passion for mental health advocacy and commitment to Stella’s Place’s mission.
  • Experience as a leader in human resources, nonprofit management, organizational development, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of HR best practices in the nonprofit sector, including recruitment, retention, and employee engagement.
  • Strong interpersonal and advisory skills to support leadership and staff development.
  • Familiarity with employment laws, workplace policies, and diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies.
  • CHRL is an asset but not required. 
  • Previous board experience is an asset but not required.
  • Valid Vulnerable Sector Screening required. 


Commitment:

  • Serve a four-year term with the possibility of renewal.
  • Attend bi-monthly board meetings (virtual or in-person) and HR-related committee meetings as needed.
  • Dedicate approximately 5-8 hours per month to board and HR advisory activities.
  • Participate in organization-wide initiatives to support staff well-being and retention.
