Commitment: Part-time, Volunteer Board Role (4-year term, renewable)

Stella's Place is a charity dedicated to supporting young adults (ages 16-29) through accessible mental health services, peer support, and community-based programs. Our mission is to provide inclusive, evidence-informed care that empowers young adults in their mental health journeys.

Role Overview:

The Director, Finance Committee Member is a key member of the Board of Directors, with specific responsibility for supporting the Treasurer and actively participating in the Finance Committee. This role works closely with the Treasurer and members of the Senior management committee to ensure the financial sustainability of our charity and compliance of financial matters for charities under CRA rules for not-for-profits. They oversee financial policies for both the operation and for gift acceptance, planning and support a successful audit process. The Finance Committee Member will also provide recommendations and insights to the Board regarding financial matters.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend and actively participate in board meetings, relevant committee meetings and at least one Stella’s Place community event per year.

  • Actively champion Stella’s Place, and our mission, while serving on the Board.

  • Support the Treasurer in overseeing financial policies, budgeting, and fiscal management.
  • Support the Treasurer and Senior Management in drafting gift acceptance tools, and policies around endowments, securities, insurance policies, use of reserves and matters financially material to maintaining charitable status.
  • Participate in regular Finance Committee meetings to review financial statements, reports, and key financial decisions.
  • Work with the Treasurer and management to ensure a smooth and successful audit process.
  • Provide financial recommendations and insights to the Board regarding budgeting, risk management, and financial sustainability.
  • Review and assess financial policies to ensure compliance with nonprofit financial best practices and legal requirements as needed.
  • Assist in identifying financial risks and developing strategies to mitigate them.
  • Offer guidance on fundraising and revenue-generation strategies from a financial perspective.


Qualifications:

  • Passion for mental health advocacy and commitment to Stella’s Place’s mission.
  • Experience in finance, accounting, nonprofit financial management, or a related field.
  • Understanding of financial statements, audits, and risk management in a nonprofit context.
  • Experience with policy design and evaluation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with board members and organizational leadership.
  • Previous board or finance committee experience is an asset but not required.
  • Valid Vulnerable Sector Screening required. 

Commitment:

  • Serve a four-year term with the possibility of renewal.
  • Attend bi-monthly board meetings (virtual or in-person) and finance committee meetings as needed.
  • Dedicate approximately 5-8 hours per month to board and finance-related activities.
  • Make Stella’s Place your “charity of choice” while serving on the Board and endeavour to financially support Stella’s Place to the best of your ability in your capacity as Board Director.
  • Attend at least one Stella’s Place event per year.
  • Participate in financial planning, audit oversight, and budget review processes.
  • Open doors to your personal and professional networks with the aim of championing the Stella’s Place mission, and financial security.
